The Sychar Water
Ministry of Fayette Presbyterian Church
Sychar Well (Jacob's Well)
In the center of Palestine in the modern
city of Nablus, a very special well stands on land purchased by Jacob. His son
Joseph, whose remains were brought back to the Promised Land by the Israelite
Tribes, was buried in a tomb not far from the well.
In John 4, Jesus stood at the Sychar
well and asked a Samaritan woman for water, eventually revealing himself as the
Messiah (John 4:5-26). He talks about normal water quenching our thirst for a
day and how the Living Waters can quench our thirst forever.
Operating Principles for Sychar Water
Ministry (SWM)
-
God’s love is our message, our motive,
and our method.
-
Everything will be done prayerfully
and to bring glory to God.
-
Anyone with a desire to help is
invited.
-
Helping someone to help themselves is
preferred (educating and building local capability).
-
“Low tech” solutions based on locally
available material are preferred.
-
Plans are flexible and subject to
modification.
-
Any one wanting to help is welcome.
Nature of the Problem
- In Nicaragua, estimates are 80% of illnesses affecting
the population are related to contaminated water
- According to some studies, the consumption of safe
water has reduced the risk of contracting diarrhea from between 44% and 85%
- In Nicaragua only 23% of the population has sustained
access to sources of clean water
- World-wide five million children under the age of five,
die from water borne diseases each year
- A Pan American Health Organization study indicated
filtered drinking water could eliminate 55% of all infant deaths in Latin
America
Why Use A Clay Pot Filter?
- Provides safe drinking water, removing turbidity and
eliminates most bacteria (which cannot pass through its tiny pores)
- The filter is impregnated with colloidal silver, which
reacts with harmful agents and is harmless for human beings
- Since the pot is made of clay it is culturally
acceptable to local communities
- Compares favorably with other filtration methods in
terms of cost efficiency and effectiveness

Description of Clay Pot Filter
1) a porous clay
filter medium
2) a larger clay
recipient canister (a plastic bucket can be substituted) and lid
3) a spigot
attached to the bottom
-
The filter medium itself is 31 cm in
diameter, 24 cm high, holds 7.1 liters of water, and is shaped like a coned
flowerpot.
-
The filter medium sits inside the
receptacle like a vegetable steamer sits inside the steaming pot. The filter
is coated with colloidal silver as a disinfectant. This filter should offer a
flow-rate of 1¾ L/hr.
The Filtron system has
successfully been laboratory tested in more than ten countries on four
continents. This technology has been proven effective in eliminating coliforms,
parasites, amoebae, and vibrio cholera from water.”
